Electoral College gives small states power

In light of the recent presidential election I feel the need to enlighten people on the Electoral College and the popular vote.

The Electoral College was created through the 12th Amendment to the Constitution. It provides that states with larger populations cannot wholly decide an election. lf the elections were based on the popular vote, the candidates would simply place themselves in states such as California, Texas, or New York, as the most populated states would provide the largest chances of winning. This would basically disenfranchise the remaining states of the union. Their votes would not matter in electing our president and vice president.

Statistically, the number of registered Democrats exceeds the number of registered Republicans. This does change from year to year depending upon the policies and actions of the administration in power. Therefore, it only stands to reason that one party or the other could receive the popular vote and still lose the election.
