Two charged in Canonsburg motorcycle shop burglary
Two Pittsburgh residents were arraigned Thursday on burglary and other charges for their alleged roles in the May break-in at a Canonsburg motorcycle shop.
Javonie Averytt, 45, and Edward Stewart, 38, were arraigned before District Judge David Mark via video on charges of burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy filed by the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Auto Theft Unit. Mark set bond at $50,000 each on the two, who are in Allegheny County jail on other charges.
State police were asked by Canonsburg police to assist in the investigation of the May 4 theft of two motorcycles from Barnes Brothers Motorcycles, 589 W. Pike St. Investigators with the auto theft unit reviewed the surveillance, which captured the theft in progress. Several people were seen stealing the motorcycles, loading them onto a U-Haul truck and fleeing.
Averytt was identified by a confidential informant assisting police in Morgantown, W.Va., who were investigating a similar theft.
Police followed up on additional information provided by the informant and went to a location where the stolen motorcycles were being stored. Four motorcycles were found, including the two stolen in Canonsburg.
Averytt reportedly admitted to his role in the Canonsburg robbery during an interview with police. Stewart allegedly told investigators that he drove the U-Haul while Averytt entered the business and stole the two cycles. He claimed he was only paid a few hundred dollars for his role.
Both men are scheduled for a Jan. 4 preliminary hearing before Mark.
