Boys basketball roundup: Waynesburg gets first win, spot in title game
Waynesburg used a 19-point fourth quarter to rally for its first victory of the season, 51-41 over Albert Gallatin, Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Ligonier Valley Tournament.
The win sends the Raiders (1-6) into tonight’s championship game against either the host team or Derry. This was the third meeting already this season between Waynesburg and Albert Gallatin and the Raiders avenged a 69-48 loss to AG 17 days ago in the Fayette County Coaches tournament and a 41-point loss on the Colonials’ home court Dec. 14.
This time, Waynesburg led 23-22 at halftime but AG (2-6) took a 35-32 lead into the pivotal fourth quarter. Darton McIntire, who scored a team-leading 16 points, freshman Lucas Garber, who followed with 15 points, and Jimmy Straight led the Raiders’ attack in the final quarter as they outscored AG 19-6. Straight scored all of his six points in the fourth quarter.
McIntire finished with a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds.
Bentworth 55, Jefferson-Morgan 33: Levi Jordan and Jacob Davis combined for 35 points and Bentworth advanced to the championship game of its own tournament by defeating Jefferson-Morgan 55-33 in the first round.
Jordan scored a game-high 23 points as Bentworth (5-2) defeated Jefferson-Morgan (2-5) for the second time in six days. Davis followed with 12 points as the Bearcats forged a 36-14 halftime lead and held the Rockets to only 10 points over the middle quarters.
First Love 101, Philadelphia West Catholic 61: First Love Christian Academy put six players in double figures and crusied to a 101-61 victory over Philadelphia West Catholic at the Aliquippa Tournament.
First Love (5-1), which will play Aliquippa at 8 p.m. tonight, had a balanced scoring. Julian McGee led the way with 15 points, Naim Miller and David Collins each contributed 14 points, Elvis De La Rosa had 13 and Dylan Morrison and Prince Odura each scored 12.
California 63, South Allegheny 45: Kass Taylor had a season-high 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead California to a 63-45 win over South Allegheny in the Bentworth Holiday Tournament.
Johnny DeFranco tossed in 13 points and Jaycee Conaway added 12 for the Trojans (7-2), who led by as much as 25 points in the second half. South Allegheny (4-4), which had 11 three-pointers, was led by Derrick Lockhart with 19 points and Mike Snyir with 16.
Carmichaels 68, Mapletown 21: Liam Shea and Cody Brown combined for 34 points as Carmichaels downed Mapletown, 68-21, in the first round of the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.
Shea tossed in 19 and Brown 15 for the Mikes (5-2), who led 34-9 at halftime.
Beth-Center 60, Geibel Catholic 38: Beth-Center advanced to the championship game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament with a 60-38 victory over Geibel Catholic in the final game of the opening night. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
