Edinboro upsets No. 2-ranked California, 71-54
Jontay Walton came off the bench to score 23 points and Edinboro upset California, the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II, 71-54 Friday evening in a PSAC West Division game at McComb Fieldhouse.
The loss was the first of the season for California (5-1, 11-1) and knocked the Vulcans out of a first-place tie in the West. Edinboro (6-0, 10-2) shares the lead with Mercyhurst (6-0, 11-1).
California had won 21 consecutive regular-season games, the previous loss coming last season at Edinboro.
Edinboro raced to a 20-11 lead after one quarter but Cal pulled to within 36-33 at halftime. The Fighting Scots held Cal to only 21 second-half points including nine points in the fourth quarter.
Cal was dominated on the boards as Edinboro outrebounded the Vulcans 43-22. Edinboro also shot 50 percent from the field.
Katie Fischer scored 17 points for Edinboro, Clara Rosten had 12 and Nicole Johnson 10.
Miki Glenn paced Cal with 15 points, Shatara Parsons scored 14 and Seairra Barrett had 10 before fouling out. The Vulcans played without forward Precious Martin (11.7 points per game).
Wash & Jeff 58, Saint Benedict 43: Danielle Parker, a sophomore forward from Canonsburg, scored 19 points and Washington & Jefferson had to grind out a 58-43 victory over the College of Saint Benedict in the consolation game of the Catholic University tournament in Washington, D.C.
Parker made seven of 14 shots, including a pair of three-pointers, and grabbed eight rebounds. Danni Medovich also contributed eight rebounds for the Presidents, who improved their record to 6-4.
Saint Benedict (7-4) led 17-13 after one quarter but W&J held CSB to only four points in the second quarter as the Presidents took a 27-21 lead. Saint Benedict shot only 28 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game with 20 turnovers. CSB took a pair of one-point leads in the third quarter but a three-pointer by Amirah Moore gave W&J the lead for good at 33-31 and the Presidents closed the quarter on a 13-2 run.
Macy Kelly led CSB with 15 points.
Waynesburg 76, Otterbein 66: Katie Gehlmann scored a game-high 21 points and made five of Waynesburg’s 10 three-point field goals as the Yellow Jackets overcame a halftime deficit and defeated Otterbein 76-66 in the Cardinals’ Smokey Ballenger Classic.
Waynesburg (7-4) trailed 36-34 at halftime but an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good at 48-41. Otterbein (5-6) cut Waynesburg’s lead to 64-62 with 4:56 remaining, but a three-point play by Monica Starre started a 10-1 run by Waynesburg that secured the victory.
Haley Delaney had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Waynesburg, and Anna Bartman came off the bench and scored 12 points in 11 minutes, making four three-pointers.
Addy Knetzer grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The Yellow Jackets were 10 of 27 from three-point range.
Kiersten Taylor led Otterbein in scoring with 19 points.
Otterbein 66, Waynesburg 53: Bryan Mackenzie scored 15 points, including 9 for 10 at the free-throw line, and Otterbein made 10 three-point field goals en route to a 66-53 victory over Waynesburg at the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio.
Otterbein (5-6) led 34-20 at halftime and held off every second-half charge by Waynesburg (4-7).
Christian Korly was the Yellow Jackets’ leading scorer with 16 points and Jon Kanb followed with 15.
Hiram 94, Wash & Jeff 62: Hiram had 14 different players score, led by Paul Ortz’s 13 points, and the Terriers crusied to a 94-62 victory over Washington & Jefferson at the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio.
W&J (0-10) trailed by nine points at halftime then went cold from the field in the second half. Brian Lindquist did have a big game in a losing effort as he led all players with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Christian Rohaus followed with eight points.
Ortiz scored all of his points in the first half, then Hiram (5-6) shot 54 percent from the field in the second half while W&J made only nine of 35 (27 percent) from the field.
Edinboro 76, California 71: Jaymon Mason scored 33 points and Edinboro held off a second-half comeback by California to defeat the Vulcans 76-71 in a PSAC West Division game.
It was the fourth 30-point game of the season for Mason and the eighth of his career.
Edinboro (2-4, 4-6) led 39-28 at halftime but California (0-6, 3-9) closed to within three points with less than 10 seconds remaining.
The bulk of Edinboro’s offense came from three players. Mikeal Anderson scored 20 points and Sheldon Anderson had 18.
Daniel Sapp was Cal’s leading scorer with 17 points. Jay Tucker had 14 points and Rawshawn Browne 13. The Vulcans played without leading scorer Ramon Creighton (17.4 points per game).
