Disappointed by funding decision
I am a lifelong resident of East Washington and I am disappointed and upset to learn about the borough council’s decision to not make a contribution to Citizens Library this year.
The positive impact that Citizens Library has on the residents of this borough and the surrounding communities is far-reaching and does good for the area in ways that are hard to argue against.
As a young child, my mother took me to the library where I developed a voracious appetite for learning and reading. Some of my earliest memories are of walking down the stairs to the children’s department to check out books, attend Story Time, and always enjoy meeting with the knowledgeable and courteous staff. I formed lifelong friendships with people I met at the library.
As a teenager, I volunteered for the library, assisting with some of the same programs that I took advantage of when I was younger. I learned the value of devoting my time to volunteering and helping others.
I believe that it is vital to the prosperity of our community that our borough makes the financial contributions that the library has come to expect from us. The citizens of East Washington are some of the most active users of the library. Therefore, we should be making the contributions to help fund it properly.
Citizens Library is an integral part of our community, and it has made a difference in my life and the lives of many of the people who have lived here. Should we be remembered for a shortsighted decision like this? I urge the East Washington Borough council to continue funding Citizens Library.
