Football-feuding couple going to Kansas City
If marriage is a compromise, engaged couple Lisa Girdish and Dave Jones should be just fine.
She’s a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he’s a Kansas City Chiefs fan, and together, they have turned their Deemston home into an homage to the football giants. Black, gold and red adorn everything from shower curtains to walls to carpeting.
Before Illinois native Jones relocated, Richeyville-born Girdish decorated her entire downstairs – family room, kitchen and bathroom – in Steelers decor.
When Jones moved in four years ago, he requested a change.
“He said, ‘We have to do something with the family room,'” Girdish said.
Her first project was a ceiling fan, the blades of which she painted red and black. After that, Girdish started customizing, and now, black, gold and red dominate. Outside, an 8-foot-tall Antonio Brown and Alex Smith coexist peacefully.
Even the couple’s cat, Tommy, gets a change of bandana depending on who’s winning.
Girdish and Jones will travel to Kansas City to watch their beloved teams go head-to-head Sunday. Jones, who has witnessed the Chiefs lose to the Steelers twice in Pittsburgh, is confident his team will pull off a win on their home turf, Arrowhead Stadium.
In addition to five family members, friend Rhonda Mucci of Donora, is going along for support.
“I know I won’t be the only Steeler fan there, but I don’t want to be the only one in my row,” Girdish said.
In addition to bragging rights, the fan with the winning team will get some sort of prize, still to be determined. But Jones isn’t worried. He predicts the Chiefs will beat the Steelers in a close game, 24-17.
As for Girdish, “I don’t want to say ’cause I don’t want to jinx us.”
