Girls basketball roundup: Jefferson-Morgan secures playoff berth
Jefferson-Morgan clinched a WPIAL playoff berth with a 36-30 win over visiting Geibel Catholic in Section 2-A Tuesday night.
The Rockets (5-3, 9-10) held Geibel (5-3, 8-8) to only eight first-half points and then held off a second-half comeback by the Gators. Jefferson-Morgan’s win also assured section-leader West Greene of at least a share of the title.
Jefferson-Morgan had a balanced scoring effort as Jamie Lawrence led the offense with nine points and Krista McCartney followed with eight.
Geibel’s Jillian Yorish and Grace Nowicki shared game scoring honors with 13 points each.
Mapletown 57, Hundred (W.Va.) 23: Anny Antill scored a game-high 16 points and Mapletown bounced back from a close loss at Avella Monday night to roll over visiting Hundred (W.Va.) 57-23.
Antill scored six of her points in the first quarter, when Mapletown (7-12) got off to a fast start and forged an 18-4 lead. Antill was one of three Maples in double figures. Hannah Dingle scored 13 points and Kayla Smith scored 10.
Hundred’s record fell to 2-15.
Burgettstown 55, Bentworth 29: Kacie Prasko scored 11 points, Malia Castellino had 10 and Burgettstown won its third game in a row, 55-29, over winless Bentworth in a non-section game on the Bearcats’ home court.
Burgettstown improved its record to 13-6.
