PITTSBURGH (AP) – Mayor Bill Peduto has confirmed that a Pittsburgh firefighter overdosed at a fire station last month and was revived with Narcan, which is used to reverse heroin and other opioid overdoses.

The mayor says the firefighter will get a second chance after receiving assistance for his problem.

Authorities aren’t naming the firefighter and say he and those who helped revive him won’t be charged criminally under a Good Samaritan law that aims to prevent people from being charged in non-fatal overdoses.

The Tribune-Review first reported that police were dispatched to Station 26 on Brookline Boulevard shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 31.

Before Peduto confirmed the overdose Thursday, city public safety officials referred to the incident only as a “medical emergency.”
