Rostraver Township commissioners on Wednesday authorized the borough secretary to advertise a proposed ordinance adopting the Pennsylvania Construction Code.

Solicitor Albert Gaudio said that about 90 percent of the municipalities in Pennsylvania have adopted the state’s Uniform Construction Code, which governs construction, demolition and repair of buildings.

Rostraver Township currently uses guidelines set by the state Department of Labor for commercial and residential buildings. Commissioner Devin DiRienzo said that the state construction code has been in existence since 2004 but the township had opted out of it until now.

Commissioner President Gary Beck said there will be no permit fee increases as a result of adoption of the state construction code.

We will be streamlining services,” DiRienzo said. “Under the current agreement with the Department of Labor a permit may take up to 30 days to be approved. Permits are approved within 24 hours to seven days with the Pennsylvania Construction Code.”

DiRienzo said that ordinance will be good for the township and its residents.

In other news, commissioners awarded a contract to A. Monzo Construction Co. of Latrobe for construction of a storm sewer on Country Drive. The cost of the project is $119,057and Monzo was the lowest of 27 bids received. A date has not been set for the start of the project. Construction is expected to be completed within 90 days of the start date.
