Just like most 10-week-old puppies, this little guy loves to give out kisses to his caregivers. The difference between him and others pups, he has a metal rod that impaled his small head.

University Veterinary Specialists in Peters Township, which offers 24-hour emergency and trauma care, received a call Friday afternoon after the puppy was found in Bentleyville. Two veterinary technicians were sent in the UVS Express Pet Transport and the terrier mix returned to the Washington road facility, said AJ Owen, UVS marketing manager.

“A CT scan was done and it looks like it went through either at or just behind the eyes,” Owen said. “It could very well affect his vision, but they won’t know until they go in surgically.”

Owen said their chief medical officers and specialists have been discussing the best way to remove the rod.

“At this point, we are not sure when the rod will be removed but it will be soon,” he said Saturday night. “I don’t know if it will be tonight or tomorrow.”

Owen said the rod is about 5-inches long.

“The puppy is in stable condition,” Owen said. “He seems to be in great health, otherwise. He was giving some kisses to some of our staff.”

Owen said the staff has not yet given the puppy a name.

The Washington Area Humane Society was contacted and the case is being investigated. Owen said they cannot be more specific about where the puppy was found because it may be an abuse case.

Financial assistance for the case is being provided by the UVS Cares Foundation.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Owen said. “The phone has been ringing off the hook since last night.”
