GREENSBURG (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania man who called police to say his girlfriend shot herself has been jailed in her death after police say the evidence proved otherwise.

Fifty-three-year-old Allen Trent was jailed Monday after being arraigned on a single count of criminal homicide in the death of Frances Smith.

Police say Trent and Smith argued before he shot her in the head with a .44-caliber revolver as she lay in bed, then called 911 about 8:45 p.m. Sunday to say the woman had shot herself.

The incident took place at the couple’s home in South Greensburg, a tiny borough about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Trent, who was jailed without bond in Westmoreland County.

He faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 24.
