Several local groups are collaborating to hold a Valentine’s Day event to raise awareness of sexual and physical violence against women and girls.

The event – a cooperative effort by Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Oennsylvania, Mystro’s Movement, SPHS STTARS program, Washington & Jefferson College and Washington Health System Teen Outreach – is among those that will be held around the world Tuesday in connection with the “One Billion Rising” campaign.

The “billion” in the name refers to the number of women – one in three worldwide – who are beaten or raped during their lifetimes. The events are aimed at highlighting the prevalence of violence against woman and to celebrate survivors.

The event will include a dance that participants are encouraged to learn beforehand. An instructional video entitled “How to: ‘Break the Chain’ Choreography” is available on YouTube.

The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at the President’s Patio of Washington & Jefferson College on Lincoln Street.

Participants may begin arriving at 4:30 p.m. to begin staging the event.
