A Hanover Township man has been jailed on a probation detainer after authorities reported finding handguns and a cache of suspected stolen items at the house where he was living.

Levi Stroud, 21, has been in Washington County jail since Tuesday, when police accompanied probation officers during a check of Stroud’s compliance with terms of his probation in a previous case.

Hanover Township Officer Dan McMurtrie said police and probation officers found two handguns previously reported stolen, and police obtained a warrant to search the house. Officers said they found 150 to 200 items suspected of having been stolen from cars in the area.

McMurtrie said other items police reported finding at Stroud’s home included computers, GPS devices, mobile hotspots, hand tools used in construction and wallets with identification in them that didn’t belong to Stroud or other occupants of his home.

“Me, personally, I’ve taken multiple theft-from-vehicle reports, and when I went through the home I knew what I was looking for,” McMurtrie said. “A good number have been reported stolen, and we were able to identify them from our reports, and we’ve had people come in and identify their items.”

He said police also found a small amount of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia at the home, but it’s unclear to whom it belonged.

The next day, McMurtrie said police searched another township home based on a tip from an informant who claimed Stroud had sold a handgun to the man living there, and found a third handgun that had been reported stolen.

“Two of the guns were from West Virginia and another was from Findlay Township in Allegheny County,” McMurtrie said.

Charges have not been filed in connection with the stolen property investigation. McMurtrie said police would need to consult prosecutors in the multiple counties involved.
