National Poetry Month will be observed in April, so the library is holding a poetry competition. Greene County residents are invited to submit original poems to the library in March. The competition will be broken down into kindergartners through second-graders; third through fifth grade; sixth through eighth grade; ninth through 12th grade; and adults. Entry forms are available at the circulation desk. A separate form is required for each submission. All entries must be submitted by April 1; first-place prizes will be awarded in each age category. Winners will be announced on April 13 during the library’s Poetry Reading and Award Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Winners and participants are invited to read their original work during that time; light refreshments will be served.

State and federal tax forms are available at the library. The forms displayed available will be determined by the supply from the federal and state governments. The IRS will provide listings for tax help lines if more assistance is needed; library staff is not trained to offer tax advice.

Those who shop on Amazon Smile can donate to the library by selecting its Children’s Library Association as its charity. Amazon Smile (smile.amazon.com) works with all Amazon accounts, including Prime Memberships.

Registration is underway for a Play K program for 3- to 5-year-olds and their caregivers that starts March 6. The six-week program will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. Space is limited to 10 children per session. The Play K curriculum allows children to “play kindergarten.” Each session will include a reading time and circle time, focusing on Pennsylvania kindergarten readiness skills and activities, such as using scissors, a calendar and taking turns. Each session will feature a different theme: color, vehicles or pets. The Office of Commonwealth Libraries as part of its Cruise Into Kindergarten initiative has provided a grant for the program.

Spring story time will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, March 15 through May 3. Each week, the stories will be accompanied by crafts and snacks.

A PHEAA representative will visit the library March 15 to help patrons complete financial aid applications. The session begins at 4 p.m. Registration is required by calling the library.

Registration is underway for the annual Chess Tournament for first- through 12th-grade residents of Washington County that will be held in March. The tournament will last five rounds. There will be a lunch break after the second round; lunch will be provided to all players and parents who attend. All entrants will play in all five rounds, with a cumulative score determining the winners. Trophies will be awarded for first and second place. Toddler Time for children up to 3 years old is held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There is reading, singing, sign language, networking and early literacy activities.

Preschool Tales and Tunes for 3- to 6-year-olds with an adult is held from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There are books, songs and activities to build early literacy skills.

Kids in Motion for toddlers and preschoolers is held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. Activities include animal yoga stretches, activities to music and chasing bubbles.

Wee Build Construction Club for 1- to 10-year-olds will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Friday through May. Children younger than 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Legos also will be provided for older children.

Scrabble is played from 1 to 3 p.m. every Monday.
