New Eagle man arrested on assault, threats charges
A New Eagle man was arrested Sunday by Monongahela police after he allegedly assaulted a woman, forcing her to barricade herself and four children in a bedroom, and then threatened officers after he was taken into custody.
Nicholas Murphy, 35, of 184 Morton St., is charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, terroristic threats and harassment.
Police were called to his home after a 911 dispatcher got a call from a woman screaming for help. While they were on their way, police learned that she locked herself in a bedroom with her four children but that Murphy was tying to force his way into the room.
When police arrived, the could hear the woman yelling for help from inside the house and a man later identified as Murphy yelling obscenities about who was knocking on the door. Murphy refused to let officers inside the house and tried to block the door, pushing officers and refusing to move to allow them to check on the woman. Murphy reportedly refused to listen to police and struggled with them as they tried to restrain him.
The woman told police that Murphy was intoxicated and had accused her of cheating on him. He reportedly spat in her face before hitting her in the face and chest. Murphy allegedly chased her and the children into the bedroom. He reportedly threatened to kill he and her mother.
After he was removed from the police car at the station, he reportedly threatened to spit on police, challenged them to fight him and also threatened their wives or girlfriends.
Morton was arraigned before District Judge Traci McDonald and placed in Washington County Jail on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled for a March 7 preliminary hearing before District Judge Mark Wilson.
