Police: Stolen firearm found in Washington
An 18-year-old and 22-year-old from Washington were placed in jail after police allegedly found a handgun that was reported stolen in a vehicle one of them was driving.
A state trooper said he stopped a vehicle Saturday described as a “silver Mercury” near the intersection of East Wylie Avenue and Chartiers Street in Washington about 7:30 p.m. after he spotted an expired registration. The trooper determined the driver, Wilco McClain, of Washington, was driving with a suspended license. He also said an odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle and he allegedly saw a small amount of marijuana in its ashtray.
Two troopers searched the vehicle and allegedly found a 9-mm handgun – which had been reported stolen in the city – under the driver’s seat. Police said the passenger, Nyyair Salih, allegedly later admitted to having bought the weapon and placing it where a trooper found it.
Salih, also of Washington, was charged with receiving stolen property, carrying an unlicensed firearm and possessing a firearm when prohibited and jailed on $50,000 bond set by District Judge Ethan Ward. McClain was jailed on a parole detainer.
