Doran delivers as Cal wins 10th straight

Lana Doran is known as the defensive specialist for California University. Against Slippery Rock Wednesday night, Doran showed that she can do more than just play defense.

Doran scored a game-high 19 points as California, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, rolled to a 79-55 victory at Slippery Rock in a PSAC West Division game.

Doran, who was a starter on Cal’s national championship team two years ago but sat out last season because of a knee injury, made seven of 17 shots against The Rock (6-10, 9-13).

Seairra Barrett scored 16 points and Miki Glenn had another fine all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals for the Cal (15-1, 21-1). Precious Martin came off the bench and scored 11 points as Cal extended its winning streak to 10 games.

C.C. Dixon, a transfer from Cal, was The Rock’s leading scorer with 11 points.

Saint Vincent 54, Waynesburg 52: Susie Ellis made a three-point field goal with one second remaining to give Saint Vincent a 54-52 victory over visiting Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Waynesburg (8-5, 12-8) led by as many as 11 points in the second half but its offense went into a deep freeze over the final 11 1/2 minutes as the Yellow Jackets were held to only five points. Waynesburg led 47-36 after three quarters.

Ellis was the only player to score in double figures for Saint Vincent (9-4, 12-8) with 11 points. The Bearcats used the three-point shot to fuel their comeback as they made eight of 23 from behind the arc.

Forward Addy Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, led Waynesburg with a game-high 17 points that included the 1,000th of her career, which came on a layup in the first half. Haley Delaney followed with 15 points. Both Delaney and Knetzer grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Monica Starre scored 11 points for Waynesburg, which was 1-for-15 from three-point range and 9-for-20 at the free-throw line.

Wash & Jeff 72, Westminster 60: Taylor Cortazzo carried the offense scoring a game-high 21 points as Washington & Jefferson defeated Westminster 72-60 in a PAC game at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

W&J (10-3, 13-7) remains in sole possession of second place in the conference. The Presidents led after each quarter, including 35-33 at halftime.

Cortazzo made six of 15 shots and eight of 10 free throws for her second 20-point game in the last four contests. Dani Medovich also was in double figures with 13 points

Kylie Cook led Westminster (3-10, 8-12) in scoring with 12 points.

The Presidents pulled away with a 9-0 run in the second half that opened a 63-49 lead. Rachel Bellhy scored five of her eight points during the key 3½-minute stretch.

Men’s results

Slippery Rock 52, California 44: Naquil Jones came off the bench to score 11 points and Slippery Rock defeated cold-shooting California 52-44 in a PSAC West Division men’s basketball game Wednesday night.

California (5-10, 8-13), which began the night tied for the final conference tournament berth from the West Division, shot only 30 percent from the field made just three of 17 three-point attempts.

Slippery Rock (8-8, 12-10) led 28-21 at halftime but Cal closed to within two points three times in the second half but could not take the lead. The Rock led 48-38 with less than six minutes remaining, but Cal went on a 6-0 run to close to within four points with 1:04 left. The Vulcans, however, would not score again.

Cordell Smith led the Vulcans with 11 points and Tony Richardson had 10.

Saint Vincent 83, Waynesburg 76: Austin Ford led five saint Vincent players in double figures with 13 points and the PAC-leading Bearcats rallied with 50 second-half points to defeat visiting Waynesburg 83-76 in a foul-filled game

Waynesburg (4-9, 6-14) led 39-33 at halftime as Jon Knab scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the first 20 minutes. Saint Vincent led 67-66 with 7:19 remaining, then outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-10 down the stretch.

The teams combined to shoot 69 free throws with Saint Vincent (12-1, 16-4) making 32 of 41.

Marcus Wallace scored 18 points for Waynesburg.

Westminster 80, Washington & Jefferson 70: Austin Armwood scored 16 points and Westminster held off visiting Washington & Jefferson 80-70 in a PAC game.

Westminster (9-4, 13-7) sued a 14-2 run to forge a 76-61 lead with 1:50 remaining, ending the upset bid by W&J (1-12, 1-19).

Brian Graytok made 10 of 16 shots and scored 22 points to lead W&J. Brian Lindquist followed in the scoring with 16 points, Mike Zappala had 12 and Sean Stinelli 11.
