BAMA churches plan community services
As has been the tradition for several decades, the Brownsville Area Ministerial Association’s member churches will celebrate the Lenten season at a different house of worship each week that will feature a community service, guest speaker and fellowship hour.
“As the Christian family of Brownsville, we join our hearts together to acknowledge our great need for God’s mercy and forgiveness,” said the Rev. Roger Diehl, BAMA president and pastor of Allison Church of the Nazarene.
“In worship, we contemplate the depth of God’s love for us all. In fellowship, we celebrate the restoration and joy we share because of our Savior Jesus,” Diehl said. “Join us with the spirit of expectation and harmony as we reflect on his grace.”
The Lenten schedule is as follows, with all services beginning at 7 p.m.:
March 2 – Historic Church of St. Peter, 300 Shaffner Ave., Brownsville, with the Rev. Frank Lewis of State the Correctional Institute – Fayette.
March 9 – First Christian Disciples of Christ, 512 Second St., Brownsville, with Mark Kovscek of Christ Church Anglican, Brownsville.
March 16 – Christ Church Anglican, 319 Church St., Brownsville, with Father Tim Kruthaupt of Historic Church of St. Peter, Brownsville.
March 23 – Allison Church of the Nazarene, 416 Vernon St., Allison, with Pastor Andrew Dent of Canaan Baptist Church, Hiller.
March 30 – Calvin United Presbyterian Church, 307 Spring St., Brownsville, with Minister Sandra McCain of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Grindstone.
April 6 – Allison Christian Disciples of Christ, East Avenue, Allison, with the Rev. Louise Corbett of Hopewell Presbyterian, Brownsville.
The Lenten worship services will be canceled if Brownsville Area School District is closed or closes early because of inclement weather.
About half of BAMA’s 35 churches historically have participated in the Lenten Series, which serves to unite the community and showcases the various houses of worship. The collections each week go to BAMA’s fund for the less fortunate.
Maundy Thursday worship services on April 13 will be held in many churches throughout Brownsville, and a Good Friday Tenebrae service will be held at 8 p.m. April 14 at the Historic Church of St. Peter
Also this Lenten season, the partner parishes of St. Cecilia and the St. Peter will hold weekly faith-sharing sessions at 6 p.m. Mondays and 1 p.m. Wednesdays in the church office, 118 Church St., Brownsville. Participants will study the Gospel and Old Testament readings.
