When he was brought into Peters Township emergency veterinary hospital almost a week ago, the 10-week-old terrier mix had a 5-inch metal rod protruding from his head that went into his brain just behind his eyes.

The rod was removed during emergency surgery Saturday night, about 30 hours after “Puppy,” as he is being referred to, was brought into University Veterinary Specialists Friday by Express Pet Transport after the hospital received a call he had been found in the Bentleyville area.

“He is doing phenomenal,” said AJ Owen, UVS marketing manager. “The one eye looks like it will heal. The other eye we are still unsure whether he will lose his vision, but it is improving.”

Owen said the staff is waiting to see if he loses his vision in the one eye. If so, the puppy will have to undergo another surgery to have the eye removed.

The puppy, who still does not have a name, is a favorite with the veterinary staff.

“He is rarely in his cage,” Owen said. “He’s always out getting as much love as he can handle. He certainly is not shy. He’s just a great puppy.”

Owen said the response from people in the Pittsburgh area has been amazing, with about 150 making donations by check or credit card to the UVS Foundation for his care. He said that Target Freight Management made a significant donation on Tuesday.

Owen said Tuesday the hospital had no update from the Washington Area Humane Society, which had been contacted about the abuse. Telephone calls placed by the Observer-Reporter to the humane society were not returned.

Donations for the puppy’s care continue to be accepted through the UVS Cares Foundation, 2810 Washington Road, McMurray, Pa. 15317. To donate by credit card, call 724-717-CARE. Members of the Bentworth Leo Club also will be collecting donations at various businesses in the Bentleyville area, including Giant Eagle and King’s restaurant, this weekend.
