CALIFORNIA – Playing without leading scorer Mikki Glenn, who’s out with a knee injury, the California University women’s basketball team wanted to prove it had more than just one big-time scorer.

Seairra Barrett showed that was the case Friday night in the opening round of the Atlantic Regional, as she scored 29 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the top-seeded and host Vulcans held off Glenville, 88-86, in a first-round game at Hamer Hall.

Shatara Parsons added 20 points and 14 rebounds for California (29-3), while Abbey Sporio added 12 points and 11 assists.

Kristin DesRocher came off the bench to score 25 points for Glenville (24-6), which led 37-36 at the half before the Vulcans exploded for 52 points in the final two quarters.

Bailey Cooper had 13 points off the bench for Cal, which will play Mercyhurst, a 63-51 winner over Shippensburg Friday night, in Saturday’s semifinals. Precious Martin added 10 points for the Vulcans.

Erika Toney scord 11 points and had 10 rebounds, while Paris McLeod scored 13 points and Maya Horne had 11 for Glenville.

In the other games Friday at California, Indiana defeated John C. Smith, 59-55, while Virginia Union knocked off Wheeling Jesuit, 66-58.
