Waynesburg’s Wasson finishes third at state rifle championships

Hunter Wasson of Waynesburg fired a 409.9 to finish third at the PA State Scholastic Team and Individual Smallbore Rifle Championships.

Wasson just missed winning the state title, rallying with a strong 104.8 on his final target to finish behind overall champion Luke Brambley of Everett and Sarah Rodocker of Woodland Hills. Brambley shot a 410.8, while Rodocker had a 410.5.

Trinity’s Jessica Baker also finished as a state medalist, firing a 406.8 to finish in eighth place.

Noah Lemley of West Greene was 14th with a 404.2, while McGuffey’s Kyle Dietrich was 20th at 401.1. Dietrich’s teammate, Julia Corrick was 32nd with a 397.9, while Wade Richards of Avella fired a 396 to place 35th. Emily Tuttle of Waynesburg finished 39th with a score of 394.5.

In the team portion, Trinity, which won the WPIAL championship, finished sixth, with Sara Hritz leading the way with a 203.6. Baker shot a 203, Azriel Florian 202.8, Derek Till 202.1 and Krista Huffman 202 as the Hillers’ finished at 1,013.5.

Woodland Hills, which was edged by Trinity in the WPIAL finals, won the state championship with a score of 1,022.2, led by Bobby Carr’s 207.2.

• Despite strong efforts from Wade Richards and Cailey Dahlquist, Frazier-Simplex JRC Gold team finished second to DuBois High School’s A Team at the NRA Junior 4 Position Section and PA State Championship shoot held at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club.

Rachel Sprague of DuBois was the overall champion of the event, shooting a 394-27X, with teammate Abigail Zeitler finishing just behind at 394-16X.

Richards shot a 392-25X to finish third overall, while Dalquist was just behind him at 391-23X. Zach Nicolella added a 388-19X and Haley Wilkerson had a 388-16X for the Frazier-Simplex team.

Murrysville’s JRC Green team was third, while DuBois’ B team finished fourth.

Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club’s JRC Mellow Yellows was fifth, led by Cassidy Turner’s 390-22X. Ali Rovers fired a 388-22X, Joseph Warabow 385-16X and Christina Strati 352-10X as the Mellow Yellows shot a 1,489-66X.

Allegheny JRC was sixth, while Dormont-Mt. Lebanon’s JRC Blue Devils team finished seventh. Julianna Strati (348-8X), Tristan Long (337-8), Max Young (329-7X) and Nicholas Rollin (307-5X) competed for the Blue Devils.

• Frazier-Simplex won the much-anticipated third match against Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club, 1,489-1,474.

Avella High School rifle coach Jim Mounts, who took home high senior and overall honors for the week with a 299, led the way for Frazier-Simplex. Haley Wilkerson fired a 298 – the high junior and lady score – and Zach Nicolella, Becca Spencer and Zac Szabo all had 297.

Dormont-Mt. Lebanon was led by Matt Piatt and Dean Trew, who both shot 297, a 294 by Bethel Park High School rifle coach Tom Benedict, and 293s from Curtis Turner and Miles Ford.

• You might have noticed some trout stocking trucks rolling down the road late last week.

The stockings will pick up even more this week, with several local waterways being stocked.
