WILKES-BARRE (AP) — A northeastern Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to at least a year in prison for a hit-and-run that killed a man crossing the street in a wheelchair.

Twenty-one-year-old Kingston resident Danielle Castrignano apologized in court Thursday. She says she kept driving because she didn’t know she had hit someone; she has said previously she thought she hit a shopping cart.

Twenty-year-old Cory Ryan had been using a wheelchair as he recovered from a car crash. He was crossing the street with his girlfriend and some friends in downtown Wilkes-Barre when he was struck June 15.

Luzerne County Judge David Lupas sentenced Castrignano to the mandatory minimum of one to two years in state prison on a charge of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident. Castrignano had previously pleaded guilty.
