A man was taken to the hospital after he lost control of a pickup truck he was driving in Washington about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses said first responders performed CPR before taking him to Washington Hospital.

“As far as I can tell so far, it sounds like (the driver) had some type of medical condition,” said city Detective Dan Rush.

Rush identified the patient as David Schrader, but his age and address weren’t immediately available.

Renee Hardie-Post, 49, of Washington, said she was driving west on Jeffferson Avenue behind the Chevrolet Silverado when it veered onto the sidewalk of a small shopping plaza.

The vehicle traveled along the wall of the building before returning to the street, crossing the busy intersection with East Wylie Avenue and stopping on the far side of Wylie.

Hardie-Post said she estimated the truck’s speed as having been “at least 35 miles per hour. He took that wall and that curb pretty good.”

A passerby pulled Schrader from the truck and onto the curb.

The truck’s front passenger-side tire was blown out by the time it came to rest.

The pickup and a Chrysler 300 it struck on its way through the lot were towed. The car was parked during the incident, Rush said.

The shaken passenger who’d been in the pickup declined an interview.

Janice Messmer, 62, of Washington said she was waiting at the light on East Wylie, before the pickup came to rest right in front of her car.

“I knew there was something wrong when that truck pulled out in front of the car (on Jefferson) right after it hit the building,” Messmer said.
