Washington County residents may notice a black helicopter flying over power lines today and Thursday.

However, there is nothing to be alarmed about, according to West Penn Power’s spokesman Todd Meyers.

The helicopter is being used to perform aerial transmission line inspections in Peters Township, Charleroi, Cecil Township, Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, South Fayette and Yukon.

The inspections are necessary to identify damage or issues that could lead to service interuptions in West Penn Power’s 1,700-mile transmission, according to a news release from Meyers. An experienced observer will accompany the pilot to identify any areas that will need repairs.

The helicopter scheduled for the patrol has a registration number of N8330P.

The low-flying helicopter may hover directly above structures or specific areas to get a better look at any problems, such as damaged wire, broken cross arms, failed insulators and other problems not visible from the ground.

Inspections of the entire grid are expected to be completed in 10 days, weather permitting.
