Fall Festival at Cal U. explores various cultures
California University of Pennsylvania will celebrate its College of Liberal Arts Thursday with a multicultural Fall Festival featuring performances, food and crafts.
Faculty presentations begin at 9:30 a.m., with indoor and outdoor festival activities scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at various locations on Cal U.’s main campus.
A complete schedule is available at http://www.calu.edu/.
The Fall Festival showcases a variety of cultures, including performances by member of Cal U.’s Department of Music and Theatre, the Young and Gifted Gospel Choir, a cappella groups, and African, salsa and Latino bands.
Academic activities include a presentation about Egypt from Emad Hakim, the university’s second visiting Fulbright foreign language teaching assistant in the Arabic language program; a Chinese writing workshop; and student research presentations.
Visitors can try their hand at crafts projects, and samples of ethnic food will be available at no charge throughout the day.
From 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., alumnus Stephen V. Russell will discuss “American Presidents: Celebrating Red, White and Blue,” his personal collection of political memorabilia, which will be on display in the gallery on the third floor of Manderino Library.
Russell is a historian, educator and consultant for ESPN Sports, Turner Classic Movies and Hofstra University’s nationally recognized presidential conference. His collection of JFK memorabilia is one of the largest in the world.
The exhibit also will be on view in the gallery Monday through Oct. 15. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Sundays through Fridays and 9 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Teachers who would like to bring a class, or others planning to attend as a group, should call Fall Festival co-organizer Andrea Cencich at cencich_a@calu.edu or the university’s Art and Languages Department at 724-938-4182 or 724-938-4246.
