Washington has scheduled a cleanup day for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and is asking for volunteers to rid the city of litter. Those fed up with the filth can report to three locations: the Tylerdale fire station, the West End playground at the corner of Baird Avenue and Broad Street, and St. Paul AME Church on Ridge Avenue.

At the same time, the Washington Rotary Club will be cleaning up its Patriots Pavilion and immediate area on South Main Street.

With Earth Day (April 22) just two days away, Saturday is a good day for everyone in Washington and Greene counties to do a little spring cleaning of our streets, roadsides and environment.

The city should be applauded for making an effort to combat embarrassing litter while most other municipal governments have been disturbingly silent on the matter, despite the attention the issue has received lately in our letters column.

If we’re to make our community a cleaner and safer place to live, it’s up to all of us to do the neighborly thing and lend a hand.
