A homeless man has been indicted in federal court on charges he and an unnamed suspect conspired in December to rob a bank branch in Union Township at gunpoint of $5,184.

In a five-count indictment and arrest warrant unsealed Monday, prosecutors charged Orlando Williams, 30, with robbing a Huntington National Bank branch at 3576 Sheridan Ave., court records show.

Williams is accused of entering the bank and standing shoulder to shoulder with another suspect while both aimed firearms at the tellers and demanded money from them.

They allegedly fled the area in a stolen Ford Escape. Shortly after the robbery, Southwest Regional police said a witness followed the vehicle and noticed it drive over a mulch bed, punching a hole in the oil pan. As she followed in her vehicle, the woman also witnessed one of the suspects toss out a money bag after a red dye pack it held exploded.

Police followed the trail of oil to where the suspects got away after abandoning the vehicle about two miles from the bank.

Williams, who was already in custody in a separate case, faces bank robbery, firearms and assault charges in connection with the bank robbery, court records indicate. He was ordered held without bond in the case.
