Boys basketball roundup: Balanced attack powers Chartiers-Houston
Three players scored in double figures to send Chartiers-Houston past Frazier, 58-49, in a Section 2-AA game Tuesday night.
Cam Hanley led the way with 15 points, Andrew Clark scored 19 points and Zach Southern had 10 points. Clark went 10-for-10 from the free throw line and the Bucs (3-0, 8-2) were 15-for-20 as a team.
J.D. Celaschi and Brandon Lovis each scored 15 points for Frazier (2-1, 4-5).
Canon-McMillan 65, Connellsville 34: Jason Fowkles scored 19 points to help Canon-McMillan race by Connellssville, 65-34, in Section2 of Class 6A.
Ethan Beach scored 13 points and Drew Engle 11 for the Big Macs (3-1, 9-1), who had 8 of their 10 three-point field goals in the first half.
Jalen Rodgers scored 18 for the Falcons (2-3, 7-5).
Trinity 72, Thomas Jefferson 34: Zach Ecker had a double-double to power Trinity over Thomas Jefferson, 72-34, in a Section 1 game of Class 5A.
Joey Koroly tossed in 19 points and Dylan Kern added 15 points for the Hillers (3-1, 7-3).
Thomas Jefferson fell to 1-3 and 2-9.
Upper St. Clair 62, Peters Township 43: Three players scored 13 points to help Upper St. Clair to a 62-43 win over Peters Township in Section 2 game in Class 6A.
Chris Pantalis, Kyle Meinert, and Brett Moore scored 13 for USC (3-2, 7-5).
Peters Township (0-4, 4-7) was led by Sam Petrarca’s 12 points, Matt Stuck’s 11 points, and Daniel Boehme’s 10 points.
South Fayette 64, Waynesburg 51: Noah Plack led four South Fayette players in double figures with 14 points and the Lions pulled away late to win at Waynesburg 64-51 in Section 3-AAAA.
Plack scored six of his points in the pivotal fourth quarter, when South Fayette (3-1, 6-4) outscored the Raiders 23-13. The Lions were 7-for-10 at the free-throw line in the final eight minutes.
Drew Franklin scored 13 points, Conner Mislom had 11 and Braden Hoy 10 in the Lions’ balanced attack.
Lucas Garber of Waynesburg (1-4, 4-7) was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points. Darton McIntire followed with 14.
Monessen 107, Mapletown 15: Lyndon Henderson scored 32 points and host Monessen put up 68 first-half points en route to a 107-15 thumping of winless Mapletown in Section 2-A.
Cory Fleming followed Henderson in the scoring column with 20 points, Vaughn Taylor had 17 and Darius Stevenson 16 for Monessen (2-0, 3-5).
Seth McCann scored five points for Mapletown.
Geibel Catholic 59, Avella 56: Cole Kendall scored 18 points and Geibel Catholic pulled out a 59-56 victory at Avella in Section 2-A.
The game was close throughout and wasn’t decided until a three-point shot at the final buzzer by Avella’s Matt Craig rimmed out.
Avella (0-2, 0-8) battled back from a 30-24 deficit at halftime to tie the score at 54-54 with 37 seconds left. Geibel (1-1, 3-6) then missed a free throw that Avella rebounded but the Eagles committed a turnover that gave the ball back to the Gators. Geibel then made three free throws around a missed shot by Avella, setting up Avella’s last-second opportunity to force overtime.
The Eagles’ Dylan Markle matched Kendall for game scoring honors with 18 points. Craig finished with 17 points.
Fort Cherry 60, Jefferson-Morgan 39: Fort Cherry remained undefeated in Section 2-AA with a 60-39 victory over Jefferson-Morgan.
Nate Higham scored 24 points, including seven three-point field goals, and had five rebounds to lead the Rangers (4-0, 6-5). Ryhan Culberson was close behind with 21 points, 14 rebounds and four assists.
Bentworth 59, Carmichaels 41: A strong 18-6 run in the third quarter allowed Bentworth to come away with a 59-41 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 2-AA game.
Devond West scored 16 points, Stephen Harner 15 and Levi Jordan 14 for the Bearcats (2-2, 5-3), who led 31-22 at halftime.
Nick Mundell and Chase McAfee each scored 10 points for the Mikes (0-3, 6-4).
California 78, Beth-Center 54: Drew Miller poured in 22 points to propel California to a 78-54 win over Beth-Center (1-3, 4-7), which trailed California 23-9 after one quarter.
Ben Wilson tossed in 17 points, Cochise Ryan 15 and Colin Phillips 10 for Cal.
Beth-Center (1-3, 4-7) was led by Easton McDaniel and Andrew White, who each scored 13 points.
In other games: Brownsville snapped a five-game losing streak with a 56-45 victory over visiting Charleroi. McKeesport was an 81-56 winner over visiting Ringgold.
