Main Street was once a bustling place in Washington. Note that cars are parked on both sides of the street. Merle Norman Cosmetics, Steiner’s, J.C. Penny, Star Sportswear Shop, and a number of restaurants are pictured in this photo that’s dated April 28, 1961.

Down the street from the Washington County Courthouse used to be Three Star Restaurant & Bar, Pences Hallmark, First Federal Savings & Loan. The image is dated Sept. 21, 1960. Today, Washington Financial occupies this space on the block.

Hudson’s Jewelers photographed on May 29, 1971. Note the sign that says “New Spring Costume Jewelry” for $1. Today, this building has been condemned, and stands vacant at the corner of North Main and Chestnut streets. The clock is still there, albeit not functioning.

The 1960s and 1970s aren’t that long ago, but so, so much has changed since the photos on this page were taken. It was an era where local children were thrilled to be allowed to walk from their homes to Downtown Washington to shop, eat or take in a movie. While efforts are underway to revitalize Downtown Washington and new businesses are indeed popping up on Main Street and the surrounding area, we thought it would be fun to see how it looked before the suburban sprawl.
