Girls basketball roundup: South Fayette drops showdown but Kosmacki scores 1,000th
Sam Kosmacki scored 12 points and reached 1,000-point milestone Friday night but South Fayette was unable to hold onto a fourth-quarter lead as it fell to West Allegheny, 58-55.
The Lions, who were eight minutes away from at least a share of the Section 1-5A title,squandered a 50-41 lead they had entering the final eight minutes.
West Allgheny (8-1, 15-5) outscored the Lions 17-5 in the fourth quarter to take sole possession of first place in the section.
Grace Faulk led the Indians with 18 points as they swept South Fayette (7-2, 12-5) in the regular season.
A win for South Fayette would have earned it a third consecutive section title.
Monessen 35, Mapletown 34:
After being dominated in the third quarter, Monessen flipped the script in the final eight minutes and defeat the Maples 35-34 in a Section 2-A game.
Being outscored 16-3 in the third, the Greyhounds were a new team in the final quarter as they outscored Mapletown 13-3 for the comeback win.
Led with the scoring of Sidney Caterino, who finished with a game-high 15 points, Monessen (2-7, 3-16) took a 19-15 lead into halftime.
Mapletown (4-5, 8-13) was paced by Kelsi Smith’s 10 points. The Maples are in search of a spark prior to entering the playoffs as they have lost four of their last five games.
Beth-Center 60, Jefferson-Morgan 31:
Kinlee Whited scored 16 points and Beth-Center won at Jefferson-Morgan 60-31 in a non-section game.
It was the first of three consecutive road games to end the regular season for Beth-Center (12-7). The Bulldogs led 27-14 at halftime and then held J-M to two third-quarter points.
Olivia Greco had 11 points for Beth-Center. Krista McCartney was the leading scorer for Jefferson-Morgan (2-17) with 11 points.
