In college baseball

Dan Trettel hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Luke Zahren in the 10th inning of the opening game of a doubleheader as Washington & Jefferson defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 5-4, in the Russmatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.

Entering the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 4-2, W&J pinch-hitter James Artale hit a two-run home run to the game and send it into extra innings.

Presidents’ starting pitcher Bryce Schnatterly surrendered four runs, two earned, on 11 hits over seven innings. He didn’t receive much help from his defense as W&J committed four errors.

Will Bowser earned the win for W&J (8-8).

Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2-2) split the doubleheader with a 6-0 win behind starting pitcher Nathan Mulzer.

Mulzer allowed on three hits through his seven innings and struck out four.

The Pointers only needed two innings to do damage against W&J, scoring three runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.

• In an early pair of Presidents’ Athletic Conference games, Thomas More defeated Waynesburg University, 3-2 and 9-0, in Crestview Hills, Ky.

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead in the opener when sophomore Brenden Kohan hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Thomas More (2-0, 4-7) then rallied with two runs in the fifth inning and held on for the victory, despite Waynesburg getting the tying run into scoring position in the ninth.

Tyler Reis led Waynesburg (0-2, 4-10) with two hits.

The Saints’ lineup started off strong in Game 2, scoring six runs in the first four innings to give starting pitcher Jayson Essell an early lead.

Essell didn’t need much help as he scattered seven hits over 6 1/3 innings and struck out four to earn the victory.

Sean Lawrence went 4-for-4 for Thomas More, while Blaise Ostertag and Ben Laumann each had three hits for the Saints.

• California University failed to score a run in either game and was swept by No. 15 Mercyhurst, 1-0 and 4-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader.

The Vulcans only combined for five hits in the two games as they lost their sixth consecutive game.

Cal is 0-2 in the PSAC, 9-8 overall.

In college softball

Waynesburg ended a four-day layoff to split a non-conference doubleheader with Franciscan, an 8-0 victory and a 4-2 loss.

Courtney Messenger went all five innings, struck out five and only allowed four hits in the opening game for the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg High School graduate Tara Staley went 2-for-2 with a home run in the victory. Staley, a freshman corner infielder, is hitting .343 through 12 games.

The Yellow Jackets are 6-6.

In college lacrosse

Franklin College defeated Waynesburg 23-0 in women’s college lacrosse.

Abby Stayer led the Grizzlies with seven goals and three assists. Jess Silva also had four goals as Franklin (1-2) jumped to an 18-0 lead after the first half.

The Yellow Jackets are 0-2.

In high school baseball

Trey Rohanna smacked a two-run home run to help Waynesburg shut out West Greene, 10-0, in a six-inning game at Waynesburg University.

Brandon Turcheck pitched five shutout innings and struck out seven. Luke Robinson tripled and Kyle Shriver and Kyle Blasco each had RBI doubles.

• Ryan Ross had two hits and drove in a pair of runs as Beth-Center scored nine runs in the fourth to defeat Washington 13-3 in five innings at Wild Things Park.

Andrew Bower went 3-for-3, and Noah Myers had two hits for Beth-Center in both team’s season opener.

Anthony Dellapenna earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs.

Jared West took the loss for Washington.

Alex Crawford had two singles for the Prexies.

• Zach Rohaley and Cam Weston combined for 15 strikeouts as Canon-McMillan edged Evanston, Ill., 4-2, in Vero Beach, Fla.

Rohaley struck out eight in four innings and Weston struck out seven in three innings. Brandon Kline hit a solo home run and Connor Flaherty doubled for C-M. Nick Serafino went 2-for-4 with a run.

In high school softball

Kaylie Anderson, Emilie Snyder and Leah Lindley each had three hits as Bentworth defeated Haddon Heights, N.J., 11-1 in six innings at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Anderson, who went six strong innings in the circle, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning end the game with the mercy rule.

Synder and Lindley each had a triple.

• Kaylie Anderson had a leadoff single and eventually scored on a passed ball in the eighth inning as Bentworth defeated North Bergen, N.J., 6-5 in Myrtle Beach.

Leah Lindley pitched all eight innings for the Bearcats and was helped by a triple play to get out of danger in the fifth inning. Lindley had seven strikeouts in the win.

Bentworth ended the game turning a double play.

Emilie Snyder hit a triple, Anderson had a double.
