A motorist who is also a firefighter called 911 to report a Greene Township house was engulfed in flames Wednesday afternoon.

The call about the fire at 478 Garards Fort Road was made just after 4 p.m.

Carmichaels-Cumberland Township first assistant Chief Mike Riggen said the homeowner, Charles “Jay” Reid, tried putting out the fire, which appeared to start in a front room, with an extinguisher.

PennDOT shut down Garards Fort Road from Carmichaels Road to the state game lands while firefighters from Carmichaels-Cumberland Township, Bobtown-Dunkard Township and Greensboro worked to extinguish the blaze.

Reid’s cousin and neighbor, Dave Reid, said the wood-frame house, which was a total loss, was built in 1889.
