High school softball roundup: Belle Vernon’s Parshall sets school strikeout record
It didn’t take Belle Vernon softball pitcher Bailey Parshall long to get into a groove in the circle.
The Penn State recruit set a school record with 20 strikeouts as Belle Vernon defeated Steel Valley 2-1 in a non-section game.
Parshall also was a part of a two-run fifth inning for the Leopards, who pushed across the game-winning run on a Kourtney Gavatorta single. Parshall also had an RBI single in the inning.
Steel Valley (0-1) did collect four hits off Parshall, including a triple for Morgan Farrah, the only extra-base hit in the game.
Marissa Hoesch drove in the lone run for the Ironmen with a single in the sixth.
Carmichaels 12, Charleroi 2: Megan Walker had a double and a triple as Carmichaels defeated Charleroi 12-2 in a five-inning, non-section game.
Only leading 3-1 after four, Carmichaels exploded with nine runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-1 lead. The big inning also secured a win for starting pitcher Kylie Sinn, who had six strikeouts. Sinn also had a triple.
Sam Mavilla had two doubles for Charleroi.
Waynesburg 24, California 1: Paige Rutan and Rachel Elsenheimer each drove in seven runs in Waynesburg’s 24-1 victory over California in a three-inning non-section game.
Elsenheimer hit two home runs and doubled and Rutan homered and doubled twice for the Raiders (2-1). Jordan Sibert and Brooke Meek each had a double.
California fell to 0-2.
West Greene 15, Avella 0: West Greene pounded out 18 hits and opened their defense of a state title with a 15-0 four-inning win over Avella in a Section 2-A game.
McKenna Lampe went 3-for-3 with a home run and triple and scored three runs for WG. Twin sister Madison went 1-for-3 withe 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Savannah Pettit went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Mackenzie Carpenter drove in 2 runs. Madison Renner had a single, double and 3 RBI. Kaitlyn Rizor went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. Jade Renner struck out nine and allowed only one hit.
Chartiers-Houston 5, Southmoreland 1: Shaylyn Vanscyoc drove in two runs and Chartiers-Houston broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth to grab a 5-1 victory over Southmoreland in a non-section game.
Ella Brookman went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI and Kaitlyn Dittrich drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Dittrich did not allow an earned run in 7 innings.
In other games, South Fayette defeated Hudson Catholic, N.J., 23-10. In their second game of the day, the Lions lost to Olmsted Falls, Ohio, 4-2, in eight innings. Both games were played in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Jefferson-Morgan defeated Fort Cherry 5-4 in non-section action. Macey Robie had a three-run home run for the Rangers. Cait Dugan had 15 strikeouts and earned the win in the circle of J-M.
