In high school baseball

Richie Dell struck out 13 and allowed just two hits as South Fayette edged Kennedy Catholic, 1-0, in a non-section game in Tampa, Fla.

Tyler Bedillion drove in the winning run with a hit in the fifth inning.

In college baseball

A three-run second inning powered Mercyhurst to a 6-5 victory over California University and a sweep of a PSAC West doubleheader. The Lakers won the opener, 12-3.

Mercyhurst led, 6-2, heading into the seventh and had to hold off a 4-run rally by the Vulcans (0-5, 9-11). Cal loaded the bases but Austin Logan grounded out to third base on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

Jack Elliott hit a two-run homer for Mercyhurst. Levi Krause smacked a solo shot for Cal.

In the opener, Mercyhurst broke a one-run game open with four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh. Dan Elliott and Matthew Schneider, who ha a homer, combined to drive in seven runs.

In college softball

Alex Lawrence homered and drove in five runs to pace Waynesburg to a 10-1 win over Pitt-Greensburg and a split of Saturday’s doubleheader. Waynesburg dropped the second game, 7-2.

Cat Allstat went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the Yellow Jackets. Rachel Skon went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to back the pitching of Courtney Messenger, who allowed one run in five innings.

In Game 2, eight of the nine starters had at least one hit for Pitt-Greensburg (4-8). Rachel Keenan tripled and drove in two runs. Lawrence went 1-for-3 and scored a run and Skon knocked in a run on a groundout for Waynersburg (7-7).

In college lacrosse

Ben Ward and Rocco Ruscitto each scored four goals as the Washington & Jefferson men’s team raced past Bethany, 16-4.

The victory keeps the Presidents undefeated in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference at 3-0, while improving their overall mark to 4-6. The Bison are 0-3, 2-5.

Mark Mandak joined the four-goal scorers with a hat trick of his own, and Dylan Shepherd had his first career multi-goal game with a pair of goals. Ward’s eight points matched his season high, as the sophomore also handed out four assists. The four goals for Ruscitto were the second straight game he’s matched his career best.

UConn rolls on

Napheesa Collier had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help top-seed UConn beat Duke 72-59 Saturday and advance to the Elite Eight for the 13th consecutive season.

UConn (35-0) will face defending national champion South Carolina (29-6) Monday night in trying to reach an 11th straight Final Four.

Alexis Jennings scored 20 points, A’ja Wilson added 20 points and 13 rebounds, and South Carolina beat Buffalo 79-63 to keep alive its quest to defend its title.

Surgery for Giants’ Bumgarner

San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner has undergone surgery to have three pins inserted into the broken pinkie on his pitching hand.

Bumgarner had surgery Saturday, and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

The 28-year-old ace was injured Friday when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield in a spring training game.

The 2014 World Series MVP missed nearly three months last season with a shoulder injury after a dirt bike accident on April 20 during an off day in Colorado.

Sale hit by line drive

Boston’s Chris Sale and his fellow aces are having all sorts of trouble with these tuneup starts.

Sale was knocked off the mound by a line drive Saturday and exited with a bruised left hip. He said the injury wasn’t serious and wouldn’t jeopardize his opening day start for the AL East champions Thursday at Tampa Bay.

Zeuge retains title

Tyron Zeuge stopped Isaac Ekpo in the second round of their rematch to retain his WBA super middleweight title on Saturday.

Ekpo was only saved by the bell in the first round and referee Mark Nelson stopped the bout in the next after Zeuge knocked the Nigerian challenger to the canvas with a series of right blows to the head.

The unbeaten German improved to 22-0-1 (12 KOs), while Ekpo dropped to 32-4 (25 KOs).
