At The Meadows

Classicality celebrated his return to The Meadows with an easy victory – his fourth straight at his home track – in Monday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap Trot.

Classicality turned in subpar efforts in his last two starts at Northfield Park, finishing fifth and seventh with a break. Back in familiar surroundings, he zipped to the lead for Brian Zendt and never had an anxious moment, defeating the ground-saving Charles VII by 4-1/4 lengths in 1:54.3. Call For Justice rallied for show.

Lisa Dunn owns and trains Classicality, an 8-year-old Classic Photo-Penn Worthy Lane gelding who now boasts $557,192 in career earnings.

Aaron Merriman, Mike Wilder and trainer Bill Rhoades each collected a pair of wins on the 11-race card.

Inaugural Iditarod winner dies

Dick Wilmarth, who won the first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1973, has died. He was 75.

His daughter, Rebecca Wilmarth, says he died Wednesday after a battle with cancer.

Dick Wilmarth was one of 34 teams in the initial Iditarod from Anchorage to Nome.

He told the Associated Press in 2001 that he put a dog team together a few months before the race, mostly by swapping goods for dogs in Alaska Native villages along the Kuskokwim River. He got five dogs for a snowmobile.

The first Iditarod was a tough go, with hardly any trail markers along the 1,000-mile (1,609 kilometer) route. He finished the race in 20 days, about twice as long as mushers today.

The mine worker and pilot never raced the Iditarod again.

Suh signs with Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a one-year contract with Ndamukong Suh, adding the dominant tackle to their defensive front alongside All-Pro Aaron Donald.

The Rams announced the deal Monday.

Suh was released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this month after three seasons when he declined to restructure his contract. He attracted widespread interest before agreeing to join the defending NFC West champion Rams.

Suh is a five-time Pro Bowl selection during his eight-year career with Detroit and Miami.

In the NHL

Evgenii Dadonov had a goal and an assist, and James Reimer stopped 32 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as the Florida Panthers moved closer to a playoff spot with a 3-0 victory over the reeling New York Islanders Monday night.

Keith Yandle also had a goal and assist, and Nick Bjugstad scored to help Florida win for the 13th time in 17 games (13-3-1). The Panthers moved within point of idle New Jersey for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. They have eight games remaining, one more than the Devils.

Christopher Gibson finished with 38 saves for the Islanders, who were eliminated from postseason contention for the second straight year with their 14th loss in 16 games (2-10-4).

  • Jack Eichel scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period to lift the last-place Buffalo Sabres over the Maple Leafs 3-2 and end Toronto’s club-record home winning streak at 13 games.

Casey Nelson had the other goal for Buffalo, which got 39 saves from Chad Johnson to end a four-game slide. Zemgus Girgensons added two assists.

Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist, and Nazem Kadri scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen made 24 stops for the Leafs, who were also looking to set a franchise mark for victories in a season with 46.
