LETTER Marianna dam removal necessary

I am disappointed to see that state Rep. Bud Cook continues to interfere with the decision of Marianna Borough to remove Marianna dam. Cook has had over a year to educate himself on the importance of dam removals and why so many are being removed around the state.

An online petition to save the dam states that removing the dam will remove recreational opportunities, such as canoe racing and fishing, which are revenue generators for the borough. A dam is not needed to canoe, fish, increase revenue or offer educational events. If money were available for dam repairs, as well as to maintain and ensure its future, that money would be better spent for parks, roads, water lines and restoring homes in the historic district.

Removing the dam will open the creek channel for more recreation, such as for kayaking and canoeing (while still having fishing spots like Pike Run). The area can be promoted as a fantastic recreational and picnic area. Removal also improves water flow and keeps sediment from building up in the creek. Sediment can contain accumulated toxins that pose health threats to humans, wildlife and aquatic life. Removal also helps restore the natural temperature range of the creek and river.

American Rivers has removed dozens of dams in Pennsylvania, and will give another presentation at a borough council meeting at the end of March or early April. I hope Rep. Cook attends.
