James T. Phillips
James T. “Jim” Phillips, 88, of Duncannon, formerly of Marysville, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018, in Kinkora Pythian Home, Duncannon.
He was born June 7, 1929, in Holbrook, the oldest son of the late W.B. and Nelle Smith Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was educated in Jackson Township, now West Greene, school system. He was a 1947 graduate of Waynesburg High School. He attended Waynesburg College in 1948, for one year. During college, he became known as “James T.”
He entered federal civil service in our nation’s capital November 18, 1963, with employment in the U.S. Coast Guard Civilian Branch. His career began as a clerk typist and culminated as a contract specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture 19 years later.
Mr. Phillips returned to Marysville in 1983.
He enjoyed playing piano and maintained his love of music throughout his life. He was especially fond of playing piano at Valley Chapel Church, which he did for 20 years.
Mr. Phillips was active in his community and as a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Knights of Pythias Buehler Lodge 269, where he held many offices, Marysville-Rye Senior Center, Shermanata Grange, Golden Age Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 102, Harrisburg, and American Lighthouse Association.
He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan.
Surviving are a brother, D.K. (Betty) Phillips; a sister-in-law, Lois Phillips; eight nieces, Diane, Linda, Lisa, Sharon, Tammy, Lori, Kim and Libby; seven nephews, Bill, Jake, Gary, John, Kenny, Bill and Robert; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a brother, John Phillips; four half brothers, Jack, David, Nelson and Ralph; four half sisters, Sara, Helen, Kathryn and Dorothy; a niece, Jane; and two great-nieces, Kelly and Heidi.
A memorial service was held Tuesday in Wesley United Methodist Church, 450 Sylvan Street, Marysville. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Friday, March 9, in Kesterson-Rush Funeral Home LLC, 3275 West Roy Furman Highway, Rogersville, PA 15359, 724-499-5181, with Pastor Gary Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill (Rice’s) Cemetery, Gilmore Township.
