Softball: Cal sweeps Gannon, improves to 23-1

Stephani Ellis hit a game-winning solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give California University a 3-2 victory over Gannon in the opening game of a PSAC doubleheader Sunday at Lilley Field. Cal went on to sweep the Golden Knights, winning the second game 6-4.
The sweep gives Cal, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, a 7-1 record in PSAC West Division play and a 23-1 overall mark. Gannon falls to 4-4, 19-6.
Gannon (4-4, 19-6) tied the opener at 2-2 by scoring twice in the sixth inning, setting up Ellis’ game-winner over the center-field fence. The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead on a solo homer by Breanna Morris and an RBI-single by Shelby Heyd.
Freshman Alex Sagl improved her pitching record to 10-1 with a seven-hitter.
In the nightcap, Cal overcame a 4-0 first-inning deficit as winning pitcher Haley Bashada threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Morris hit another solo home run and Erica Vallecorsa had a two-run double during the Vulcans’ five-run sixth inning.
• Washington & Jefferson was limited to one hit in a 2-0 loss to Frostburg State in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader, but the Presidents bounced back win the second game 7-4.
The Presidents (16-10) were held without a baserunner until the sixth inning in the opener by FSU’s Mary Anne Moore. D.J. Ufolla ended the bid for a perfect game with a single down the left-field line.
W&J scored four runs in the first inning of the nightcap and three Presidents pitchers scattered eight hits.
FSU (24-7) closed to within 4-3 after four innings, but W&J scored three runs in the seventh. All three came around to score on one play, an RBI-groundout by Chalese Wilson. After out was recorded, two more runs scored on a throwing error.
