Waynesburg swept a PAC doubleheader from visiting Bethany, 6-5 and 4-1, Saturday.
Waynesburg (6-8, 14-16) won the opener in the bottom of the seventh inning, when pinch-runner Brittany Ellis scored from third base as Jessica Garvin’s grounder was misplayed.
In the second game, Waynesburg pitcher Paige Moninger earned her first collegiate victory by tossing a complete game. She allowed eight hits and was supported by a pair of two-run innings. Katey Potopenko had a two-run homer.
• Kelsey Cunningham scored five runs and had four hits, including a pair of home runs, to highlight Washington & Jefferson’s PAC split at Geneva. The Presidents lost the opener 9-4 but rebounded with a 12-5 victory in the nightcap.
W&J (9-5, 20-12) reached 20 wins for just the fifth time in school history. Geneva remained a game ahead of W&J in the PAC standings.
Cunningham hit a home run in each game.
• In a meeting of two regionally-ranked teams, the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania softball team earned a doubleheader split with West Chester at Lilley Field, winning 2-0 before falling 4-1.
With the split, the Vulcans move to 26-2 after having their winning streak snapped at 12 games. Earlier this week, Cal U was ranked first in the initial Atlantic Regional rankings and West Chester was tabbed fifth. The Golden Rams are 27-16 overall after entering play on a four-game losing streak.
In the opener, Cal freshman Alex Sagl tossed her fifth complete-game shutout of the season to improve to 12-1. She scattered four hits and issued one walk with nine strikeouts.
