Elmer M. Sprowls

Elmer M. Sprowls, 97, of Washington, died Thursday, July 19, 2018, in McMurray Hills Manor.

He was born September 25, 1920, in Claysville, a son of the late William Montgomery Sprowls and Nellie Viola Scott Sprowls. He was one of 15 children.

Elmer retired as a dairy farmer.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a corporal during World War II. He was an airplane and engine mechanic and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.

Elmer was a member of Cecil American Legion Post 793 for 35 years. He loved to work on his word search puzzle books, walk his dog, Lola, and watch the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins. He also loved to watch WWE professional wresting and PBR bull riding.

On December 28, 1945, he married Jean Elgaline Plants, who survives. They were married for 72 years.

Also surviving are a son, Keith (Janice) Sprowls of McDonald; adopted daughter Debbie (Bill) Neal of Washington; two brothers, James (Jean) Sprowls of Scenery Hill and Charles Sprowls of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Hilda Waychoff of Ohio; five grandchildren, Ryan (Angela) Sprowls of New Jersey, Mackenzie (Jonathan) Warner of South Dakota, Evan Sprowls of Florida, Bradley (Linda) Danjou of Markleysburg and Bronson Danjou of Greensburg; five great-grandchildren, Dylon Sprowls, Rylie Sprowls, Olivia Warner, Emmaline Warner and Harley Danjou; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deceased are a daughter, Lynn Ann Tarris; seven brothers, William, Oliver, Simeon, Alfred, John, Franklin and Harley; and four sisters, Opal, Evelyn, Hazel and Catherine.

Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, with the Rev. Stewart Bair officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
