Harry Elmer Murray

Harry Elmer “Knute” Murray, 91, passed away Friday, July 20, 2018, in Wesley Commons Nursing Home, Greenwood, S.C. Harry was born in Washington, July 6, 1927, a son of the late Harry Dean Murray and Margaret Naser Murray.

He graduated from Washington High School in 1946 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1948.

Harry enjoyed boxing and in 1950 was Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion for Charleston, W.Va.

He graduated from University of Charleston with a bachelor of arts degree. He began his teaching career at Chartiers-Houston High School in Washington County and then took a teaching position at Washington High School, where he taught for 32 years.

On February 12, 1955, he married Lucile Lowry, who survives. They were married 63 years.

He and his wife, Lucile, moved to Ninety Six, S.C., in 2001, where they enjoyed their retirement years. Harry was fond of gardening and painting. He loved spending time with all of his animals, including an orphan deer he took care of for many years. He dearly loved his family and his wife, Lucile.

Also surviving are two sons, David H. (Penny) Murray of Carnegie and John H. (Charlotte) Murray of Ninety Six; daughter Ann E. (Clay) Oliphant of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren, Amanda Hughes, Candee Cugini, Jonathan Murray, Trevor Murray, Ashley Oliphant, Mack Oliphant and John Parker Murray; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Hughes, Carlee Hughes and Alayna Cugini.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery, 498 Park Avenue, Washington.

Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175, Washington.
