Starting slow wasn’t a problem for Alison Riske at Wimbledon.
The problem was the result of those matches after quick starts for the McMurray native Thursday.
After rolling to a 6-1 opening-set victory, Riske fell to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in singles play, dropping the final two sets, 7-6 and 6-2.
Bencic, a former top-10 ranked player and familiar opponent for Riske, upset No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round. Bencic eliminated Riske in the 2016 Australian Open. Riske defeated Bencic in the finals of the 2014 Tianjin Open in China, her lone WTA tour championship.
Riske and Olga Savchuk of Ukraine then failed to hold onto a lead they built in the opening round of their women’s doubles match that was suspended Wednesday.
The pair couldn’t hold a 3-2 lead it had in the third set, falling to Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and China’s Xu Yifan 7-6, 2-6 and 8-10.
