Florence tops Wild Things in series opener
FLORENCE, Ky. — Chuck Weaver pitched six innings, Skyler Ewing and Ricky Ramirez each hit a solo home run and the Florence Freedom defeated the Wild Things 6-2 Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Ewing went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, including a solo homer in the seventh inning after Washington had pulled to within 4-2. Ewing had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and a run-scoring single in the fifth.
Weaver (2-3) took a shutout into the seventh inning but exited after giving up a double to Hector Roa, a walk to Mike Hill and a two-run double to Jordan Edgerton. Roa had two of Washington’s seven hits.
Washington starter Trevor Bradley (2-2) gave up six hits and four runs in five innings.
Washington maintained its two-game lead over both Lake Erie and Joliet in the Frontier League’s East Division standings. Lake Erie’s loss to Evansville means Washington’s Gregg Langbehn will manage the Rookie squad in the league’s all-star game July 11 at O’Fallon, Mo.
