State misses NFL window for betting

Sports betting is teed up in Pennsylvania, but it won’t be up and running for the Sept. 6 start of the National Football League season.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved a set of regulations Wednesday that agency officials say is sufficient to allow sports betting to start.

However, none of the owners of Pennsylvania’s 12 licensed casinos have applied for a license and the gaming board doesn’t meet again until Sept. 12.

Licensed casinos can pay $10 million to operate sports betting.

The U.S. Supreme Court in May struck down a law that bars gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states.

Pennsylvania lawmakers prospectively legalized sports betting last October and slapped a 34 percent tax rate on it.

Penn State track recruit killed

Authorities said an incoming freshman scheduled to compete in track and field for Penn State was found shot to death at his north Philadelphia home.

Police said 18-year-old Kristian Marche was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the rear driveway of the home Monday night and died Tuesday.

Lt. Norman Davenport said investigators believe Marche’s death was a “targeted” killing rather than a random act. He asked anyone with information to come forward.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour said in a statement that officials are “deeply saddened” by “another young person taken from his loved ones far too early.”

Penn State says the Imhotep Institute Charter graduate finished second in the 100-meter dash at the 2017 PIAA state championships, third in 2016 and fourth in 2018.

Conway goes to 14-0

Matt “Sweet Child” Conway, the IBA International Lightweight champion, won by knockout in the ninth round over the Dominican Republic’s Adriano Rampirez Saturday at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

Conway, now 14-0, sent Rampirez to the canvas with a hard right in the fifth round. Conway, who trains at the Brownson House, ended it with another right in the ninth round.

At The Meadows

Rock N McRoll zipped to the front, held off the late challenge of Trillions Hanover and scored in 1:53.2, fastest in Wednesday’s $80,000 Pennsylvania Stallion Series stake at The Meadows.

The event for freshman filly pacers was contested over four divisions, with Skater Chick, Unspoken Promise and May Bride Hanover also taking splits. Tony Hall fashioned a stake double behind Skater Chick and May Bride Hanover.

It was just the second career start for Rock N McRoll; she didn’t she the lead at all in her career debut. But she responded well when Dave Palone asked her for early speed, and she dug in late to hold off Trillions Hanover by a neck. Pretty N Fast completed the ticket.

“I think she’ll find her way into the sires stakes program,” Palone said. “She just was a little behind. I love the way some of the trainers set them up with a start or two until they get feeling good about themselves before they throw them to the wolves. This filly is not short on ability or attitude.”

Linda Toscano trains the daughter of A Rocknroll Dance-McGibson for Cherry Creek Stables, Camelot Stable, Little E and Enviro Stables. It was one of four wins for Palone on the 13-race card.

Hammered down to 1-9, Skater Chick extended her winning streak to three by moving three wide down the backside and prevailing under wraps in 1:53.3, matching her career best. Able Hanover was second, 2-1/2 lengths back, with Typhoon third.
