Winning pitcher Kyle Thomas tossed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief Thursday as California University remained alive in the PSAC tournament with an 8-6 victory over Mercyhurst at Point Stadium in Johnstown.

California (34-17) will play another elimination game today (9:30 a.m.) against either Kutztown or West Chester. The win snapped a five-game losing streak in the PSAC tournament for Cal.

PSAC West Player of the Year Kyle Petty helped Cal forge a 5-1 lead in the second inning. He doubled in the game’s first run in the first inning, then drove in a run with a single during the Vulcans’ three-run second. AJ Robinson followed with a two-run single.

Chuck Gasti added a two-run single that gave Cal a 7-3 lead in the fourth, and that was enough offense for Thomas, who struck out five.
