Q: With the rate of childhood obesity increasing over the last few years, what are some fun ideas to keep my kids active and healthy?
A: Fitness should be enjoyable. For kids, and let’s face it, many adults, going for a jog may not be an idea of fun. Encourage your kids to get outdoors and play, whether they’re at the park or in the backyard. Games like tag and hide and seek can be a great way to get your kids off the couch. Interactive activities can also be great for family time. Try something like a video game that makes you physically move or dance, get out in the neighborhood or park with geocaching, or see who can do a chore the fastest. Playing recreational sports can also be a great way for your kids to stay active. This will help them develop good physical habits they will need for the future, and they may make some friends along the way.
Since being healthy isn’t only about activity, providing healthy food choices is also a must. It is important that kids have the proper fuel for their bodies. Make sure that you have lots of fresh fruit and veggies available for snacks, and try to limit cookies, soda and more processed items. Planting a garden so kids can see their food grow is a fun family activity. Cooking together can help kids learn about healthy ingredients, portion sizes and healthier alternatives to their favorite snacks. PBS Kids Cafe ZOOM is a great resource and has a variety of recipes that will help make healthy eating fun for your children.
