Comcast announced Monday it has connected more than 6 million low-income residents of the United States to the internet through its Internet Essentials program. The company calls it “the largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program for low-income families in the U.S.”

The company added that it connected 2 million-plus last year, the highest figure since the program began in 2011.

Spokesman Bob Grove said over the past seven years, the company has connected 1,000 Washington County families (roughly 4,000 residents) to the internet through Internet Essentials. That includes 600 last year.

Comcast does not serve all of Greene County, and has connected 30 families.
