Spartico Mancinelli
Spartico “Sparky” Mancinelli, 96, of Victory Hill, Monongahela, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 18, 2018, in his home, with his loving family by his side.
He was born May 11, 1922, in Monongah, W.Va., a son of the late Joseph and Mary Biordi Mancinelli. Upon the death of his mother at an early age, Mr. Mancinelli lived at Pellegrini Farm on Victory Hill. His father, Joseph, eventually bought a house on Victory Hill in 1938 and reunited his children, Spartico, Bruno and Enis, to live as a family.
During World War II, he served in the European Theater in the U.S. Army, where he was a medic and ambulance driver.
After the war, he attended electrician school in Chicago and then worked at Combustion Engineering. Later, he worked for Continental Trailways Bus Co. in Pittsburgh, until his retirement in 1986, after almost 30 years of service. He earned the distinguished Trailways Million-Mile Safety Award, driving in excess of one million miles without a chargeable accident.
He was a charter member of Victory Hill Social Center and a member of American Legion Post 949, Carroll Township. He was a past member of Brunswick Senior and New Start bowling leagues. On January 4, 2015, he was awarded a plaque for the title of deacon emeritus from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Monongahela.
Sparky loved bowling, golfing, soccer, fast-pitch softball, Mancinelli family reunion picnics, family vacations at Orange Lake and Westgate Resorts in Florida and his garden. He and his wife loved to can peaches and tomatoes. He also enjoyed watching the Penguins and Steelers and reluctantly watched the Pirates, but did so to please his wife.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ida Jean Westwood Mancinelli, whom he married September 17, 1950, and with whom he would have celebrated 68 years of marriage next month; son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Cindy of Fallowfield Township; daughter Kathleen Mancinelli (Barry Vlanich) of Craven Hill; sisters-in-law Evelyn Pellegrini Westwood and Ruth Mucci, both of Victory Hill; grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Meghan (Zack) Neil of Finleyville and Melissa (Joe) Garuccio of Valencia; great-grandson Brayden, who had lunch with his Nonno every Wednesday for the past two years; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruno Mancinelli, in 2013, and his sister, Enis Lundy, in 2014.
Mr. Mancinelli received great compassion and kindness from Amedysis Hospice Care, especially Joe, Terry, Cindy, Ashleigh and Pastor Diane, his personal caregivers, Marcy, Darlene, LuAnn, Natalie, Dayna, Diane and Kathy, Dr. William Kilpatrick and staff and Giant Eagle pharmacy.
