Five SCI-Fayette inmates charged with assaulting officers
Five inmates were charged for allegedly assaulting corrections officers at the State Correctional Institution in Luzerne Township in separate incidents reported between August and October.
Quydeem Jamal Hawkins, 25, allegedly stabbed Sgt. David R. Zebrowski in the head with a homemade weapon at about 5 p.m. Aug. 20. Hawkins, who is serving a life sentence from Philadelphia County, was reportedly swinging his dining tray toward inmates during their evening meal when another officer put him against the wall. Hawkins allegedly stabbed Zebrowski with a melted cup sharpened to a point, about 6 1/2 inches long. He later allegedly spit at an officer, hitting him in the arm. Zebrowski required five stitches to close a one-inch gash on his head, court documents said.
Francisco Junior Santos, 38, allegedly jumped out of his wheelchair and punched Officer Andrew Zapotsky in the face at about 7 a.m. Sept. 14. Zapotsky told police he has daily headaches and neck pain from the alleged assault. He said he was helping Santos, a York County inmate, find a lost ID card when he called Sgt. Jason Harvey to issue a temporary card. Harvey placed Santos on the ground after the inmate allegedly punched the other officer, and Santos allegedly bit Harvey in the stomach. Santos also reported his $175 glasses were damaged.
The next day, Marcise Andre Turner, 29, allegedly punched officer Devin Riggin multiple times in the head and face, taking the officer to the floor. Turner, a Philadelphia inmate, reportedly admitted to state police he assaulted Riggin, saying he wanted to get his partner, but that officer moved to a new block. Riggen told police it was his first day working in the housing unit.
Kahlil Karee Hammond, 29, allegedly spit on Lt. Joshua E. Poska at about 8:45 a.m. Aug. 2, hitting him in the face when Hammond was in the Law Library Cage, according to court documents filed in his case. Hammond is an inmate from Lancaster County.
Jason Lamar Hutcheson, 39, allegedly punched Sgt. William H. Stewart in the face at about 7 p.m. Sept. 9. Hutcheson is serving a life sentence from Allegheny County, according to court documents.
Hawkins is facing two counts each of assault by prisoner and disorderly conduct and one count each of aggravated assault, aggravated harassment by prisoner, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
Santos is charged with two counts each of assault by prisoner, aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct and one count of criminal mischief.
Turner is charged with assault by prisoner, aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Hammond is facing charges of aggravated harassment by prisoner and disorderly conduct.
Hutcheson is facing two counts of assault by prisoner and one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct.
