Parker surpasses 1,000 points in W&J loss

Washington & Jefferson senior forward Danielle Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, became the 18th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in a career while the Presidents were dropping a nonconference road game at Baldwin Wallace, 72-54, Sunday afternoon.

Parker entered the game needing just five points and got there when she hit a three-pointer with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter to land exactly on 1,000 points. For the game, the senior finished with eight points, nine rebounds and two assists.

W&J started slow, trailing by scores of 14-8 and 43-18 after the first and second quarters, respectively. The Presidents cut into the margin with an 18-11 advantage in the third period, but could get no closer.

Sophomore Lauren Gilbert led W&J with 13 points and three assists. Alie Seto added 11 points and four rebounds. Freshman Aleena McDaniel scored nine points and had four rebounds. Izzy Allen scored six points and matched her season high with eight rebounds.

W&J drops to 2-4 and opens Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Wednesday at the Henry Memorial Center against Saint Vincent. Tip-off at 6 p.m.

California 73, West Virginia State 43: Seairra Barrett scored a game-high 32 points as California University scorched West Virginia State, 73-43, in a nonconference game.

The victory kept Cal perfect on the season at 5-0. West Virginia State fell to 2-3.

Barrett had a double-double with her 32 points and 12 rebounds. She also was credited with five steals. Barrett was 12 of 21 from the field and hit 8 of 11 free throw tries. She also had two blocks.

Cal trailed 19-16 after one quarter but took control of the game by outscoring West Virginia State 43-17 over the middle two quarters.

Jiahna Flood-Francis scored 13 points for the Vulcans.

Jordan Miller’s 12 points paced West Virginia State.

Men’s Results

Shippensburg 61, California 58: Lamar Talley and Jake Biss combined for three freee throws in the final 1:18 to push Shippensburg to a 61-58 victory over California in a PSAC crossover game Sunday.

The Vulcans drop to 0-3 this season in their home debut after being idle for more than two weeks. The Raiders improved to 5-0 overall while playing their first road contest of the year.

Talley finished with a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds, in 26 minutes, and John Castello had 13 points and six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Dom Sleva scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.

Collin MacAdams led all players with 16 points on 7 of 16 shooting and had eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for Cal. Zyan Collins finished with 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals in 40 minutes of action.

Sophomore transfer Brent Pegram tossed in eight points, had two rebounds and a team-leading three assists in 35 minutes. Nathaniel Chambers, Jr., also tossed in eight points and had three rebounds.

North Park 64, Waynesburg 51: Matt Szuba had a double-double to lead North Park to a 64-51 victory over Waynesburg in a nonconference game.

Both teams are 1-5.

Szuba scored 24 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for North Park, which led 34-26 at halftime. Vegard Tangen and Toby Marek also were in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Frank Bozicevic paced the Yellow Jackets with 23 points and Brennan Smith contributed 15 points. Both players had eight rebounds.
